BR: The ghost and the goth

The ghost and the goth review

Characters: Alona dare, Will killian. Unlike Isobel from nevermore Alona is exactly what you would expect she is the bratty (to put it kindly) blond, mean and a cheerleader she is vapid and shallow or so you think like Isobel she does have layers and a troubled home life. Will is like Varen in that they are both dark, goth, highly troubled and have messed up lives. Unlike Varen Will has better parental support he is good looking, sarcastic and a bit of a trouble maker both characters are lively and real although more in the sense of believable compared to Varen and Isabella where you either know people like them or you really want to know people like them. The characters in this book are loveable, smart, relate able, and colorful B+

Story: The most popular girl in high school dies and is stuck with the goth boy for the fact that he is the only one who can see her this plot of cheerleader meets goth boy has been done before (and better) but “ the ghost and the goth” is not a serious story like “Nevermore” was. Yes it has troubled characters and a story about redemption and forgiveness but it played out like a mystery/romantic comedy the writing was sub par but the way the font is different with each character like on the cover is a nice touch and stands out so you know who’s head you’re suppose to be in. it does suck you in and kept you there but it didn’t feel urgent sure you couldn’t put the book down but unlike other books where you hurt not having it with you this one you could put down for a few minutes with out combusting into “got to have it got to have it” flames. The writing isn’t bad despite it sub par the flaw within it is the language while it was bearable and only three counts of the F word it became a rhythm of sorts but it still stood out highly that was the flaw with the writing. This story was half and half it was half character driven and half plot driven it didn’t feel like you could replace these characters they where important and they did make the story flow but at times it felt like the plot dragged the characters where it wanted instead of letting them live. The characters were loveable or despicable depending on the character Alona you dislike at first but grow to love and Will you love right away. The story is fast paste and unputdownable you’ll want to hit the princeable and Will’s doctor among other things. If any nit picks about this story are to be found its that the side characters are flat even Will’s friend is Flat since we learn almost nothing about her till right near the end. Over all this is a fast, fun, funny, mystery/drama that will have you flipping the last page over saying “wait thats it?” B+

Cover: Oh Will what did they do to you? So first things first the cover is funny and eye catching Ghost a nice light blue and for Goth a deep red with a haven/hell vibe the difference in the font also crosses over to the book as well Alona being very light and airy while Will’s is hard and dark. Alona looks exactly like you would picture her nice touch with the faint ghost glow and all she looks all smug and either know it all or “yeah can you believe I’m here either?” perfect. Will on the other hand…where to start? He looks board or miffed at her which is fine a deep gray hoodie with hood up again fine his shirt however is BLACK or navy blue is really hard to tell from black but a guess would be it is in fact black he is also sporting an epic leather wrist band. The only miff is that he looks way older then 17 he looks late 20’s at least and in comparison to Varen on his cover Will is not a hottie he isn’t bad but he wouldn’t make goth obsessed fangirls swoon either (unlike varen who would) B-

Rating: YA 16 and up for sexual situations and foul language

Company: Disney book group

My rating : 4 of 5 no questions asked I knew before I made it to page 50 that I’d be sticking with this book and that it would be a 4 star book. I have a crush on will now oh yes! He reminds me of my own character Ricky he is different of course but they are very similar. I did have a small nit pick with the romance surprisingly since I also have a character and an idea of how it should work human and ghost relationships like that..shouldn’t work mainly when they kissed it was described as her being solid now even my own character ricky can do that and make them solid but its not the same as with a physical body still no human contact unless you have ability and even then it’s just a cold feeling its like kissing the wind I also had issues with the language (unsurprisingly) however I did count and in the 281 pages there was only three uses of the F word more common words were of course throw around but the F word is a biggy for me the lesser ones I can ignore if the story is good and boy was this story good. So both things (and me not wanting it to rank the same omgosh fhejhf fangirlisum rank that nevermore did yeah yeah being book prejudice is bad I know) knocked it down a peg it’s more the two issues I mentioned above more then my own conflicting feelings

With a solid ending it still left me wanting more as such I will be reading the rest of the trilogy and anticipating the last book with everyone else.
